Wood  Carving Unveiled

Publications:Carved door key, Honduras Mahogany, relief carving Fred Zavadil Woodcarving

Emma Perlaky, the former president of Ontario Wood Carvers Association (OWCA) in Toronto, approached me few years ago to talk about publishing a series of books about wood carvers and woodcarving methods. One of OWCA’s goals is to raise the perception of wood carving from craft to fine art; it also strives to promote, preserve and provide education of this art form. Publishing books would touch all of these mandates. Emma asked if I would be willing to participate, much to my amusement, since everybody who knows me also knows that I do not speak or write much. After a few get-togethers and assurance that all I would have to do is “show how to”, I agreed. We decided on a topic and the result is a book “In the Workshop with Fred Zavadil”. Pictures and text are by Anne Shelton; Emma, beside being my “student” and fellow wood carver, also managed to put the book together and take care of its publishing.

The book shows my way of carving a project – idea, sketch, clay model, and carving, with special attention paid to clay modeling. I had a great time with these ladies; they did fantastic job and both of them deserve a huge thank you.

If you would like to purchase a copy of the book, please email Emma Perlaky at eperlaky@integralgroup.ca

The book is also available at Ontario Wood Carvers AssociationChipping Away , and The Woodcraft Shop.
