Publications:
Emma Perlaky, the president of Ontario Wood Carvers Association’s (OWCA) in Toronto, approached me last year to talk about publishing a series of books about woodcarvers and woodcarving methods. One of OWCA’s goals is to raise the perception of wood carving from craft to fine art; it also strives to promote, preserve and provide education of this art form. Publishing books would touch all of these mandates. Emma asked if I would be willing to participate, much to my amusement, since everybody who knows me also knows that I do not speak or write much. After a few get-togethes and assurance that all I would have to do is “show how to”, I agreed. We decided on a topic and the result is a book “In the Workshop with Fred Zavadil”. Pictures and text are by Anne Shelton; Emma, beside being my “student”, also managed to put the book together and take care of its publishing.
The book shows my way of carving a project – idea, sketch, clay model, and carving, with special attention paid to clay modeling. I had a great time with these ladies; they did fantastic job and both of them deserve a huge thank you.
